St. Isabel’s Island: A Poem

St. Isabel’s Island: A Poem

In honor of National Poetry Month, here is a poem I wrote on Sanibel Island last month. Dave and I were watching the sunset and drinking a beer. I wrote this poem in 30 seconds on my iPhone. Enjoy!

St. Isabel's Island

Today is a day of grace
Free and open and singing
But I take nothing for granted
I hold it loosely
I savor and taste but don’t swallow.
Isn’t it mine to keep?
I don’t think so.
Blessings fall on our heads like rain
We receive but don’t own them.
Grains of sand fall between my fingers on this beach
As the sun drops to the horizon
The end of the world as far as we can see
Tourists spill onto the beach with drinks in hand
Dizzy and tipsy at their good fortune
To watch the sun go down one more time
While storms rage in the north.
